(Title stolen from ‘Long Way Down’ from the album ‘Skyscraper National Park’, by Hayden)
I don’t really believe in Fathers Day, it’s just another attempt to induce spending, isn’t it. Having said that, I was wrapped this year to get a present from HardMan Harvey. He gave me a book by Nick Hornby – “A long way down”.
It took me a while to get around to reading it, but when I did I ripped through it, as I have done with all Nick’s work. It’s popular fiction. It’s lightweight, and yet, this book deals with 4 suicidal people, which is actually quite heavy. It’s a bit of a paradox in that way – some moments I was laughing, and then I’d be struck dumb by an observation or situation that really struck an emotional cord (chord?).
The story is told from the perspective of the 4 main characters, it’s nicely linear, and the changing narrative makes it easy to roll along in the story.
All in all I enjoyed it, but the ending left me a little, um, dissappointed. I wont go into it here, as I guess a few of you are still planning on reading it, which you should. I’ll post about the ending later on, if I remember…
