on shooting the past

2 June, 2006

(With apologies to the fantastic BBC mini series of the same name)
While reading this post on the need to archive, backup and store data ad-infinitum, I had a thought. I didn't post it as a comment, as it would probably be seen as a bit facile.
So I give it to you, my loyal readers.

In the early seventies (maybe 1973-74) Nick Drake(one of the finest songwriters this earth has ever seen) went into the studio for the last time. The tapes were lost or destroyed. A collection of music, that had the potential to be the most intruiging, beautiful and soulful ever heard, was gone. You will never hear it. I will never hear it. It is gone.
My point? Life goes on….

…Life goes on, and it is all the richer for Nick Drake having been with us. Although we never got to experience all of his recordings, so much has happened after his death: Beck’s covers, numerous tracks on film soundtracks, and many people naming him as a huge influence on their own music.” And now we rise…and we are everywhere…”
