an aside

21 December, 2005

I borrowed a CD from Crumpet too. The Flaming LipsClouds Taste Metallic.

Clouds Taste Metallic was recorded in 1995, about a year or so before the outstanding The Soft Bulletin. The most notable thing on the album is the drums. Steven Drozd joined the band, and introduced the amazing drumming style that carries The Soft Bulletin into another level. You can hear the beauty and drama of The Soft Bulletin’s songs starting to take shape in here, particularly in songs like Placebo Headwound, When You Smile, and Bad Days.

When Steven Drozd started to take over the arranging, and Wayne got into obfuscating his lyrics, the pop brilliance of The Soft Bulletin was born.

Isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing?

Oh, you have a new blog. Thought you could hide it from us, eh?

Another notable thing on the album is the song titles: “they punctured my yolk”, “guy who got a headache and accidentally saves the world”, and “psychiatric explorations of the fetus with needles” being particularly special. So what is a watermelon gun, anyway?
